If you know what Minecraft is, you what Mojang is. If you know what Mojang is, you know who Notch is. If you know who Notch is there’s a possibility that you know what Scrolls is. For those of you not in the know Scrolls is Mojang’s venture into the world of card collecting games. Much like Magic: The Gathering you will be collecting cards (or scrolls), building decks, and engaging in battle with your friends, enemies, and AI.
For the last year if you visited scolls.com you were met with a very basic website that outlined some information about the game and it gave you the opportunity to sign up for alpha information. That was until today. Mojang complete re-launched their website. Now you are met with a sleek new design filled with various bits of media and information. One of those gems says,
We are rapidly approaching the closed alpha of Scrolls. Although this alpha version will be far from a feature complete version of the game, it will include multiplayer matches, single player matches vs AI and the Deck Builder, where you can build your decks out of the 100+ scrolls that currently exist in the game.As we get closer to a stable build, we will stop the closed alpha, and move to an open beta, where you will be able to buy the game at a reduced price and with some added benefits (more about that later).
For those who have been following this game since its announcement this is great news. True to form you will be able to purchase the game prior to the game’s final rendition at a reduced price. This strategy worked wonders for Mojang and Minecraft. I suspect it will do the same for them this time around. Along with this announcement they released a gameplay trailer showing off a bit of the hex based combat system.
Frankly, hex based combat excites me. I love the strategy that such a system introduces to gameplay. Call me a geek, I like games that make you think three, four, and five moves ahead. I’m that way with the board games that I play and that mindset carries over to video games to. I’ll be one of the first to pick up this game. Bring it on Scrolls! Let the virtual card collecting begin.
